small in fall | solo exhibition finishes 10 June 2018

It only seems like yesterday when Christine, her Mum and David were installing the small in fall exhibition. With less than a week to go, the show will finish 4pm Sunday 10 June. But we are very excited that Christine will be at GOST for visitors to meet her in person and ask about her the new works she has made for GOST's inaugural EASS solo exhibition. She will take you on a journey through Japan and explain how the Saori weaving movement influenced the works which hang in the gallery. To read more about her works visit the online catalogue

My wanderlust - an adventure with gallery of small things

Hello everyone,

Welcome to GOST - Gallery of small things.

I'm so excited to realise a moment when I wrote down three words nearly 16 months ago - own a gallery. It was an out there moment but something resonated when I looked out from my study to the studio. I saw our 1960s laundry (attached to my ceramic studio) and wondered could I turn that space into a little gallery? My other half was pretty excited as that meant building and buying new and very much needed handyman tools!

We started the build in January 2017 and slowly worked out way through all the motions a new space takes. There were many trips to our local hardware shop, supporting local business with purchasing floor timbers, 'Whitey' (Michael) plastering the walls, Ian wiring the electrics, re-purposing French doors, creating shadow box shelves (Pinterest was my favourite source of ideas much to Adam's distress - 'You want what?"). I coaxed him around once I found drawing plans and he quietly nodded his head as he secretly enjoyed the challenges I set up for him.

The leather straps for the shelves were made by a local craftsman, Jim who loved a chinwag or two! He clearly loved his job - hand making bespoke works and relented so graciously when I asked for no patterns. I wanted a plain, blush pink leather strap for the shelves and peg holders. That's the Danish influence coming out of me....I think he'll like what we've done come opening night.

The photo shoot was handled with style by Photographers Mel and Michael who captured the look and feel I wanted with my tiny gallery.

They are my go to when it comes to photographing my ceramic works (above photo is actually Jo Victoria - a dear friend and ceramic artist) and now the fabulous works of other talented artists located in Canberra and beyond. I want to thank a young and talented designer Amy Cox who created the logo for GOST. Amy did a fabulous job in capturing the essence of GOST and the lovely line in the 'S' which looks like a vessel - so apt for objects in craft & design.

GOST is all about makers and designers. I was fortunate to meet the artists you see featured on the website through my work, the visual arts community and via friends. I've made long and lasting friendships with each artist and the day they said 'yes' to joining GOST made me realise this is my wanderlust - an adventure meant to happen. Showcasing emerging and established artists in a tiny curated space in a backyard in Canberra is what makes a community thrive. From my neighbours and the local shops to the visual arts sector in Canberra we can bring visitors from all round the world to our creative capital.
