Kyoto, Japan | Summer stories

For the past two weeks I’ve been in Kyoto, Japan sharing the experience with my dear friend Kerist. We flew Sydney to Tokyo and then 3 trains to Kyoto. It was 31 degrees, hot and luckily our hosts could collect our bags so we could wander Tokiwacho neighbourhood. We went to Higashi Hongan-ji (a Buddhist Temple). We discovered a hidden gem - a newly restored hall/gallery space.

Kerist organised to celebrate my birthday visiting the Philosopher’s Path. While it was still very hot, we had some leafy green foliage to protect us. We visited little, shops run by solo, couples and families who are keeping the arts alive as best as they can.

Before our tour started, I lucked in with visiting CLAY and CLOTH at The National Museum of Modern Art. Izzey Miyake is one of my favourite muses when it comes to fashion. The vessels made by ceramic artist Shoji Kamoda were then translated into fashion art. I highly recommend a visit as it continues to 21 June 2026.

Then for 4 days, we joined a bespoke tour to be swept away with art/craft/cooking classes and experience the indoors and nature at its best. I won’t give away too much as the girls organise these tours exclusively for smaller groups and to reveal as you enter each day. I’ve done many tours and this one has raised the bar so high it will be a hard one to beat.

I have written another travel story about Japan with all my tips (where to stay, shop, eat)
which you can read here.

Arigato (Thank you)
