Feature Artist | Jess Hall

We are thrilled to introduce Melbourne artist Jess Hall to Canberra audiences.
I received a lovely email from Jess, who I thought, sent the ideal introduction letter to consider her works for our unique stable. She put together samples of works that would suit the space and a professional 'lookbook' of her embroidery specimens and imaginary science scarves. After meeting on zoom and seeing her artworks closer in detail, I knew she'd be perfect to fill a gap with her unique style.

Jess is a multidisciplinary artist working with painting, drawing and embroidery. Jess tells us a little about her and works:

“ … Having trained as a painter, printmaker and a textile designer, my works explore liminal spaces between art and craft and art and science; looking to these influences to explore tactility and materiality. Underpinning my painting and textile work is a descriptive drawing practice … “.

Jess has sent us three sculptural works from her Fantastica series which we are lucky to have at GOST. We have selected three of her scarves - each of which will appeal in colour, pattern and style. Even I'm tempted!

PS If you miss out that's okay, contact Anne who can arrange a commissioned piece from Jess's series.

New artworks

New works have landed including:
Watercolour on papers by Lynne Flemons, framed tapestry by Lee Leibrandt and
‘gold’ ceramics by Tania Vrancic.

We have two framed watercolour/pencil on paper by Lynne. In her words:
”These works were made on site at Cradle Mountain National Park while I was an Artist in Residence at the Wilderness Gallery … walking and drawing between the Information Centre and Cradle Mountain … Ronny Creek Valley … was my favourite spot for drawing and painting”.

Lee’s little framed work is of a nature reserve located in Canberra. In her words:
"Woodland Sunbeams is a dream-like representation of walks along Clancy’s Track in Mount Majura Nature Reserve. Warm tunnels of light filter through the inky, twisted eucalypts; the blur of bushland in the distance. The tapestry was designed by mixed media collage before it was translated into woven form. It is mounted to a frame of salvaged river red gum and steel".

Tania’s ceramic vases tell a story behind the gold markings. In her words:
" ... Intuitive brushstrokes, sgraffito and ceramic pencil mark making relate to long walks on Red Hill over the lockdown season ... During my walks I began picking up and photographing leaves in their various shapes and stages of decay - it soon became a leaf obsession ... I enjoy abstracting the distant view as well as the details such as leaves. The gold flecks seek to highlight the details we often overlook".
