Visit Canberra: There's More Than They're Telling us

When I received a call from VisitCanberra (our official tourism organisation for Canberra and the ACT Government) late last year to star in a Canberra Tourism campaign - of course I said yes! I think as soon as I hung up from Sophia Mathias (Senior Campaign Marketing Officer) I did a big song and dance in the gallery!

After 5 years of running GOST, it meant so much to be invited as one of three hidden gems and let the rest of Australia know 'there's more than they are telling us'. When interstate visitors come to the gallery, I go auto pilot as tour guide and tell them what other attractions and experiences are on offer in my home town.

Often visitors gravitate to our well known institutions but I've found them wanting to extend this cultural experience and see more of the faces behind smaller businesses and art organisations. I hand them my Director Faves list highlighting our fabulous local makers and galleries. In addition, there are foodie havens, where to stay and even a beautician recommendation that extend beyond the city and sprinkle across suburbia Canberra.

So, more about the filming day. It was full on when the production crew set up for nearly 8 hours to film to a script and within the physical logistics of a space the size of an ensuite bathroom! It was lights! camera! action! and I went through my moves along with the talent as we showcased how 'Canberra's next big thing isn't big'. I loved the tone, wittiness and fresh perspective as you'll see in the ad above.

If you happen to live in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne and see GOST in motion (bus shelter, train station, radio or TV) let me know. A photo would be fabulous too! A big thanks to everyone involved in this campaign. I can't list you all but I'm incredibly grateful for this wonderful opportunity, Anne xx

New artworks

New works have landed including:
Japanese brooches by Liz (and Daisy) Taverner, ceramic posy vessels by Jacqueline Lewis, handmade bags by Liz Taverner and framed paintings by Lynne Flemons

Liz Taverner is a local Canberra maker. She makes small handbags sourcing her materials from places she's visited as well as receiving materials from friends and their travels too. Places include Japan, Laos and Guatemala. These affordable brooches and bags make the perfect wearable art for any occasion.

Jacqueline Lewis is a local Watson maker. She lives just around the corner from our gallery and we often talk about ceramics, gardening and how the tomatoes are going! Its been an interesting year with our veggies. We are loving her latest drop off of 3 glazed vessels. They are perfect for a petite posy or simply on their own. My favourite is the tomato one!

Lynne Flemons describes herself as a 'painter, drawer, landscape and place walker living on Ngunnawal country'. We have 3 small framed artworks from her stockroom collection. They are perfect for the shelf or can be hung on the wall as a trio or even on their own!

Next up in April | Pricing your artworks and Branding you

Monday 3 April is focused on how to price your artworks. I am approached by many artists (emerging through to established artists) requiring advice on how to price their works, be consistent in pricing and to understand what activities assist towards price increases.

Monday 17 April is about branding and what this means for you. After this session, you will be equipped to write a photographer's brief and be more confidence in creating a consistent visual look and feel that will work across social media, websites as well as impress galleries, funding bodies and your audiences.

For more info on workshops running now to mid-June click here.

We love testimonials!
I have done all of Anne’s professional development classes.
They cover a range of issues that arise as you prepare for competition entry,
exhibition, or go about making and documenting your artwork.
Anne covers each subject clearly, with imagination and plenty of examples.
