A little bit more | The iconic Iron bark Eucalyptus paniculata renowned for its timber strength has large flowering events every few years, providing pollen and nectar for Bees Apis mellifera. Important since it often flowers in cooler months of the year when other nectar sources are low, it is favored by beekeepers to produce a deeply coloured intense flavoured honey. Longicorn beetles Agrianome spinicollis are nocturnal and lay eggs in the rough crackly bark. Hatched larvae known as ‘witchetty grubs’ then bore holes deep into tree as they feed on wood and pupate. New beetles emerge through self-cut escape hatches in the bark and progress out into the world.
