A little bit more from Phil: These two works are an exploration of the continuing transformation of part of the Rocks area of Sydney. The name comes from Sydney’s convict era, but it was known to First Nations people as Tallawoladah. The area is the Southern springing point for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and many remnants of its construction still remain.
This part of Sydney continues to evolve, from a thriving port to a growing hub for many performing arts organisations including The Sydney Theatre Company, Australian Chamber Orchestra and Sydney Dance Company. Refurbished wharf buildings provide theatres, dance studios and other performance and rehearsal spaces. Worker’s housing and more recent social housing, such as the Sirius Building, have evolved into upmarket residential areas and bustling tourist destinations.
In Hickson Road, which was once part of the infamous Hungry Mile of the Great Depression, one of the surprises for the visitor is “Still Life with Stone and Car” and the accompanying signs (a separate artwork by Richard Tipping in the form of traffic signs which read “Artwork Ahead” and “End Artwork”).
