Feature Artist | Open Long June Weekend | We are going on a road trip!

Feature artist | Jo Sabey

We are pleased to introduce Jo Sabey from the lovely picturesque region of Gippsland, Victoria. Jo and I met through GOST private tuitions and I knew as soon as I heard her voice there was a kindred spirit on the other end. We hit it off talking all things art, her long association with galleries around Australia and desire to uptake of all things digital including a new website, creating content and revamping her CV, artist statement and bio.

This is what I love most about my job is the joy in meeting new artists, making friends and building their confidence to wear multiple hats while being an artist. These days they are running their arts practice as a business and dealing with all the marketing that is derived from social media and having a digital presence. This is in addition to making the works too!

When we finally met in person (border closures / lockdowns as we all know that so well) and she showed me her works - I was like Jo, I know you create large paintings but would you consider showing smaller works with me? Can I think about it? I have a major exhibition in 2021. I'm thrilled to say that when Jo said she had an idea brewing and could see a body of work for my gallery I was pretty stoked. In Jo's words: " ... Years can slip before the moment for an idea is ripe. This small collection of 'Little Dress Ups' has quietly flirted with my artist's eye since December 2013 when I wrote a journal entry titled 'Happenstance' ... ".

I'm sure you'll agree when you click on the button below to view her works you will fall in love with her hand painted papers which have been float mounted and each one is accompanied by a poem. She has written a beautiful Artist Statement to accompany these works which can be read once you go browsing.

Open Long June weekend

As most of you may know via social media and our website / signage at home, unfortunately I caught a nasty strain of the Omicron virus making its way through Canberra. I was knocked out for 3 days in a delirium that I never want to go back to. It's taken nearly 17 days to feel close to normal. Three weeks later, I look forward to reopening the gallery doors at 11am, Thursday 9 June.

In fact, I'll even open on Monday 13 June for the Queen's birthday long weekend. I'll be masked up and hand sanitiser will be available too.

Going on a road trip!

Adam and I usually take two weeks off mid-year during his non-teaching break. We are on a road trip to Lake Mungo after I lived vicariously through one of our artist's, Lee Leibrandt who had travelled there last year and created these beautiful works.
We plan to visit Lake Mungo National Park, Sea Lake and Lake Tyrell. I can't wait as it means getting out into nature and exploring parts of Australia we've never seen. I'll update my social media for photos and stories if you wish to follow me there.

GOST is closed 2 - 13 July 2022
We reopen Thursday 14 July at 11am
