Grace Brown

Grace Brown is a Melbourne based ceramic artist. Geometry and architecture form the basis of her inspiration which stems from her previous background in Fashion Design and pattern making resulting in a precise and often mathematical approach to building forms. Her work is often modular and movable offering a dreamlike and utopian quality that is both playful, contemporary and encourages interaction.

Brown seeks to create utopian cityscapes, dwellings, and miniature communities created as a response to the often dystopian reality outside ... whether this is from drought, natural disasters, displacement, or a global pandemic. A driving question in her work has been how can these experiences be used to reimagine and redefine the significance of home, place, community, and shared history through sculpture?

Each piece aims to play with light and shadow, prompting the viewer to consider the piece from a variety of angles. Questions arise; who lives here? What is their story? Where is their community? Through building dreamlike landscapes, a key element explored in Brown’s work is further investigating the sense of connection we have to the ever-changing environment around us and encourages dialogue on the
significance of place, community, and what it means to be ‘home’.

Anne Masters, GOST Director says, “Grace had her first solo show at Gallery of Small Things in February / March 2022. It was a sell out show for both her and GOST. I am thrilled to have her return and join the stable of artists that have made GOST a gem to visit. Our tiny spaces welcomes visitors to purchase artworks that will bring joy whether gifted to a loved one or kept for oneself’.
