Germany and The Netherlands stories | Save the date (Oct show) | New works

Germany and The Netherlands Stories | A holiday

I can’t believe we are 10 weeks into our combined working/holiday break. We are lucky to be traveling. As Mae West says, ‘You only live once - but if you do it right, once is enough’.

Nuremberg | I was so taken by this pretty German town I wrote a separate story of where to stay, what to do and so much more. If you want to see a medieval castle, pretty cobbled streets with flower laden boxes, artisans in a village, sample a local, daily market of fresh produce (oh! the raspberries were the fattest we’ve seen!), then this is the town I highly recommend putting on your wish list!

Museum Ludwig | a gem of a find in Cologne. This museum has an awesome permanent collection and a very special exhibition from Ukraine. Floor upon floor, room upon room of contemporary/fine arts and rooftop garden with views to Koln Cathedral.

Koln Cathedral | Cologne has a war torn history of being bombed and this church certainly took a pounding. Repair works seem never ending. We chose to visit The Treasury and climb the 533 steps to one of the two spires. They both were breathtakingly rewarding. Oh! The interior of the Church was equally beautiful. Put these two on your wish list for a short stay.

Food | oh! my! we tried Israeli street food for the first time in Cologne. It was the cheapest restaurant dinner by far in our travels and yummy! One traditional German meal in Nuremberg I wouldn’t recommend is the one that came out looking like it was for a Viking … half an animal with a large knife had me a little alarmed!

Amsterdam | This was so good, it too deserved a separate story. You can read all about it here. Let’s just say it’s a very fashionably dressed town with locals flying by on their fancy bikes looking fresh as a daisy! So much to do that even our 8 day stay wasn’t long enough. We will be going back again for sure!

Schaijk | off the beaten track as we stayed with a colleague’s of Adam who he met at a conference many moons ago. We stayed with Hester, Antony and their 4 kids (all under 8) in The Netherlands. The town located in a rural farming location was a fairy-book unfolding with a thatched roof house, pretty jeweler + optic shop and a gourmet deli full of goodness and wickedness! I highly recommend when travelling try to stay outside a main city for a complete change of pace.

I hope you enjoyed this little story. As you can imagine, I have so much more to say. But over to you to dream and visit one day.

Anne xx

PS An unexpected site in Amsterdam was the Holocaust Names Memorial. At first we thought it was public art until we got closer. The first brick I saw was a female aged 55 (my age) who was a Dutch holocaust victim. Of course I teared up and torn once I started to read their names. More than 102,000 names were listed. Heart-wrenching.

Save the date! EASS 2023 opens to the public 11am, Friday 13 October

We are pleased to announce GOST has continued its support with the Australian National University School of Art and Design’s Emerging Artist Support Scheme (EASS). GOST believes in mentoring and assisting visual art graduates with a foot in the door … even if ours is small!

Since 2018, we have supported 9 graduates to have an exhibition at GOST (one recipient received cash to pursue her studies affected by the pandemic).

For 2023, we are adding Ceramicist Alicia Cox, Painter Janet Jeffs and Gold + Silversmith Jonathon Zalakos to the list. They have made new works designed for our space. Please come and support these artists during the exhibition period - you never know, you may spot something you want to add to or start your collection or simply admire. Exhibition is available in person and online. Next Oct news will have more information.

New works by Pia Larsen

Pia Larsen has created two new works that are perfect timing as we head into Spring and Summer. With blue skies ahead it’s timely to bring her works into your home or work space. A little bit more from Pia, “These two works explore the colour range and history of Cyan using loose text and symbols”. Both works are unframed leaving you the choice to frame or pin to the wall.
